2016 Flooring Industry Study

A recent study conducted by BNP Market Research on behalf of Flooring Trends found that the flooring market should continue to grow in 2017. The survey compiled responses from dealers, contractors, and installers who read Floor Trends, Floor Covering Installer, Stone World, Contemporary Stone & Tile Design and Tile Magazine. Overall, respondents reported increased sales and predicted further increases in 2017. Other noteworthy findings include:

    • Area rug sales remained stagnant and minimal with the most common rugs sizes being 5×8 and 8×10. This is one of only two areas where respondents did not expect an increase in sales for 2017.
    • Carpet continues to dominate sales, though it was ranked low on ease of installation and cost to the consumer.
    • Tile was ranked highly for styling and popularity with consumers, but was at the bottom of the list for ease of installation and consumer cost. Porcelain tile accounted for 61% of total tile and stone sales.
    • Hardwood flooring received favorable rankings for durability and popularity, but it was also ranked low for cost to the consumer. Respondents reported red oak and hickory as the most common types of hardwood, while rustic and distressed looks increased significantly in popularity.
    • Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tile and Plank sales continue to rise as the perception of the products improves.
    • Laminate flooring is the second category in which the majority of respondents do not foresee an increase in 2017. Though it was highly rated for ease of installation, popularity overall fell. Of the laminate purchase, 90% had wood designs.
